The ten string cuatro is the traditional string instrument of Puerto Rico. Tuned in 4ths (cuatromeans "four" in Spanish), the sound is something between a mandolin and a 12-string guitar. Our cuatros have been made by a skilled master artisan from Camuy who uses different woods, cut at the appropriate time, and dried to create a naturally beautiful instrument. Each one will be different but you can expect the same attention to detail in each instrument. Length of the instrument is 35”, the box is 11"
The options currently in stock are listed above. We have had cuatros made out of laurel sabino, caoba (mahogany), or acacia blanca (white acacia), while the fronts are made, as most cuatros are, out of yagrumo wood. Decorative elements may also include maga, another local wood.
We sometimes have cuatros called "enterizos” which means that the back, sides and the neck of the harmonic box are carved out of one solid piece. Most have each section cut and fitted individually.<
Your cuatro will be shipped to you in a sturdy, hard case. The case is included in the price.
There is no gift wrapping for this item. This item is eligible for rush shipping (US Postal Service) for an additional charge of $30 (in addition to the regular shipping charge of 10%).
Pennsylvania cherry is one of the finest hardwoods available. Our cuatro artisan received this wood from a relative in the US. This is one of the last cuatros he made.
